Run by compers, for compers

Compers' Facebook Accounts Closed

I’ve just heard from yet another comper who has had their Facebook account unexpectedly shut down.

This is starting to become a regular occurrence now – with more and more people I know having their accounts closed each week.

At first it seemed it was just compers with a second account - solely used for comping - which were being shut down.  This I could understand as this is against Facebook rules.  But now Facebook seem to be targeting compers’ personal accounts too…

A few of these I noticed had the word ‘comper’ in their Facebook name.

But then I read of a comping friend who had her Facebook account shut which was her only Facebook account and not solely used for comping.

My friend was using just one account - with her real name - but was ‘liking’, ‘sharing’ and entering a lot of competitions on her profile.

We couldn’t figure out why the accounts are being closed without warning.  She just couldn’t log in one day…

With Facebook closing accounts, how can you be sure you’re not next?

 Here are some tips:

  1. Only use one Facebook account – so you’re not breaking Facebook guidelines. If you were annoying friends and family with posting loads of comps to your wall – then you can do the following:

When you share, post a message it has a little lock symbol in the bottom right corner – you can use this to select who can see this when you post it to your wall. You have several options on a drop down menu: public, friends, lists etc..
  2. Use your real name – no nicknames, brand names or ‘comping’ in your Facebook name
  3. Use a real profile picture and be wary of competitions that ask you to change your profile picture in order to enter. These competitions break Facebook guidelines and make your account look spammy.
  4. Add normal content to your profile. I would advise against anything that would giveaway your personal data – so be general: films you like, hobbies – but don’t mention comping! Add a real location – perhaps your nearest town?
  5. Add a few photos – and delete old competition photos you’ve been tagged in when they’re over.
  6. Add normal content to your news feed - break up those competition entries – chat to other compers, post up what you are about to eat/drink/watch on TV etc... So that if Facebook were to view your profile it appears normal and not that of a spammer.
