What happens when you win a fabulous cooking masterclass!
DAVID'S FANTASTIC WIN NOT ONLY PUT THE SPARK BACK INTO HIS COOKING- BUT ALSO HIS COMPING!
Ex Navy Chef, David Cavens, learnt some new tricks from the professionals!
David knows his way around the kitchen, he was a chef in the Navy for 22 years – but he definitely learnt a thing or two from the professional chefs on a fabulous weekend cookery course he and his wife won from a simple prize draw.
He spotted the details for the competition on our winning wire free weekly email (visit: www.winningwire.co.uk to sign up to receive it). The prize was to win a food and wine lover’s weekend, run by Sainsbury’s magazine in conjunction with Campo Viejo wine – it was a simple prize draw that had 3,000 entries.David and his wife went down to Kensington, London on the Friday night to begin their weekend adventure at Leith’s school of cookery – Sainsbury’s had organised for them to have late-night wine-tasting and nibbles.
They had great fun sampling ‘generous portions’ of delicious wines and getting to know the other 12 couples on the course. Everyone there had won the prize from a competition and it was interesting to find out where they found out about the comp. Some read about it in Sainsbury’s magazine, some in the Evening Standard (who also featured the comp) and others through comping magazines like Winner’s Friend.
Next morning, a cup of coffee with the chefs at 9.30am cut through the potential morning hang-overs and everyone set to work in the kitchen preparing a delicious menu in their couples, to eat that night: Gazpacho soup, achovy-aloive pate, almond-crusted duck breast and summer fruits.
There were no ‘cooking disasters’ in the kitchen and the chefs were on hand to make sure the dishes were all served on time. David’s wife let on to the chefs that David knew his way around the kitchen, so they gave him no mercy!
After enjoying their own handiwork all of the couples had a meal cooked for them by Chris Barber (Prince Charles’ personal chef) and left with cook books, wines, chefs’ aprons and plenty of ideas to take back to the kitchen at home.
The whole day was loads of fun; not only having the chance to cook with professionals, but meeting new people. There was a great mix of food-lovers (like David and his wife) and complete novices in the kitchen – but everyone loved it!
The fantastic win has put the spark back into David’s cooking and also into his comping! This is his first big win since he has been a member of Winner’s Friend! Now’s the cook is hooked!
