Gob-smacked! Deborah and her fabulous win in New York

Deborah Jenkinson went into JJB Sports in Oldbury, Birmingham, to buy her son some trainers. While waiting in the queue to pay, the shop assistant handed her an entry form to
win a trip to see the England football team play Columbia in New York.
You had to attach your receipt to the entry form and pop it in the box in the store. “ Honestly Jo,” Deborah tells me, “I just filled it in and completely put it to the back of my mind, I never dreamt I’d win”.

On 10th May this year, Deborah got a phone call on her mobile from Alison at JJB Sport to say she’d won the first prize - A TRIP TO NEW YORK!!! She was absolutely gob-smacked; it didn’t sink in until she told her husband Wayne. “ Wayne loves football, so was thrilled as you can imagine”, says Deborah “ and no longer makes fun of my comping hobby!”
Deborah enters about 15 competitions a week, and spurred on by winning this fab prize, she is going to make time to enter twice as many! - It pays off! JJB Sports ran two competitions; one in all the Birmingham branches, where approximately 10,000 people entered, and one in all the Birkenhead branches, which had approximately 4,000
entries. Compare this to your chances of winning the National Lottery (1 in 17 million), they are 1,700 times better!

 

Deborah and Wayne flew out to New York on 30th May and
met the winners of the Birkenhead competition at JFK airport. They were treated like royalty from the word go by Umbro, the competition promoters, and the four of them were driven by limousine to the fantastic Le Parker Meridian hotel smack in the heart of New York City. “ The winners from Birkenhead were great fun”, recalls Deborah. “ It was nice to meet up with fellow compers – we’ll keep in touch!”

 

The three days they spent in New York were a non-stop adrenaline rush – the trip was amazing. The first day they were picked up (by limousine again of course) and taken for a helicopter ride following the Hudson River, which was spectacular. They then had lunch at the Marriott hotel – in the rooftop restaurant way up on the 47th floor! The floor revolves, so you can look over the whole of New York! The next day they joined the England team on the FA bus to the football stadium and watched England beat Columbia 3- 2! The atmosphere was electric; the Columbian supporters always liven up the stadium with their energy!
The four winners had lunch with Michael Owen, who is very nice and unassuming, and chatted to Alan Ball, Gordon Banks and other members of the golden 1966 England football team who were there to support the day!

 

It was Deborah’s husband, Wayne’s first trip to New York, and he loved it – they certainly won’t be forgetting it in a hurry! Deborah’s had several more wins since she’s
been back from New York - and can’t wait for the next big prize! The fun of comping
